Nautical DIY Crafts: Guest Blog Post by Try, Take Chances, Make Mistakes

Hi Nautical Nancies,
I'm Michelle and I'll be guest blogging for Kate today! My guest post is on summer DIY decor/organization projects! After unpacking from college, I had a ton of clutter, and with clutter comes confusion and stress. So I decided I needed to do some organizing and decorating, however, because I'm so picky, it's easier (and WAY more fun!) to make my own room accessories! So here are a couple I've been working on

Lilly Organizing Boxes:

This project is SO easy! I picked up some of the Container Store Stockholm collection letter and document boxes, and ordered a yard of “Tie the Knot” Lilly Pulitzer fabric from “Lillyfabricland” on Etsy.

All I did was add a little water to some Elmer’s glue, paint it on the tops of the boxes with a brush (I think you could also use Modge Podge or another crafting glue), apply the fabric and wrap it just like a present. And voila!

Vacation Memories Art
I LOVE the Ocean! I literally have never been away from a body of water. I grew up on the Hudson River in New York, where I spent much of my time on my family’s boat or kayaking. I attended college on the southern coast of Maine, where I lived on the Atlantic in Biddeford Pool for 4 years. And for the past 15 summers my family has spent a week at our beach house in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. So now that I don’t know where my future is going to take me (geographically and figuratively!), I made these artistic reminders:

These were the simplest project! I just made them on Microsoft Word, using a variety of beachy colors and different fonts, incorporating words that remind me of the places I loved oh-so-much!
And I plan to put them in white frames. I am particularly fond of the idea of getting two of this Target frame (it’s called Bar Harbour!!) and putting these in one, and pictures of said beaches in the other!

I hope you all have fun with your summer DIY projects, and I certainly hope you have lots of free time to enjoy doing so!

Don’t forget to visit my blog!

  1. I love these ideas! Very inspirational. I am about to leave Wilmington, NC next month and I thought the second idea would be excellent as a parting gift to give my roommates! Thanks!

  3. I need to figure out how to do this in Word. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm guessing you used text boxes.

Also, thanks for the source for the Lilly fabric.
