I want to make sure I have all of the basics. I have some of the essentials (LBD and riding boots are on my list) but I definitely need to invest in some pieces that will last for years (a nice blazer for example). Back in 2011 I wrote a post about the top 10 in my closet. I would still say at least half of those are still top 10 so that's something.
I often see books or blog posts on building the perfect closet. What pieces you really need and what you don't actually need. My first step will be trying every single thing on. If it doesn't fit it goes. I will be doing this over the weekend.
I am not sure what phase 2 will be. Putting outfits together and getting rid of anything that stands alone? Getting rid of anything I haven't worn in over a year? Making a list of things I want to invest in?
I am looking for any and all tips on closet overhauls!
I always do a definitely give away, maybe and keep pile. I put the maybe's in a storage bin and revisit them every few months and continue to edit down. Something might seem fresh and new then! I also try to remember if I haven't worn it in over a year, I probably won't again.
ReplyDeleteI want to try to do something every few months. Way more manageable!
DeleteI try to go though my closet a few times of year and if I havent's worn something in a year (unless it's something I really love that I forgot I had...) I give it to a charity.

I really should get rid of the stuff I haven't worn in over a year. An easy place to start!
DeleteI will usually have a few different trash bags out. One bag is for used, no-name brand clothing that I can donate. One bag is for clothes that I just want to trash (or that I think no one will want. Think like old bras, sweats, etc). Then I keep one bag for brand-name clothes that I can either sell on Poshmark or using one of those consignment sites.
ReplyDeleteI also like to hang my clothes based on color. All my navy/white/red (nautical) clothes are in one section, and then all my black/gray/leopard clothes are in another. (It's sad that my closet consists predominately of those two styles. Haha.)
I try to hang as much as I can. It helps me to be able to see all my clothes rather than forget they don't exist in my drawers.
PS: If you find anything I'd like, let me know! We have the same (awesome) style, and I think close to the same size.

I've never thought about organizing by color! I definitely hang most of my clothing
DeleteI haven't found anything great yet but will email you if I do!
When I moved into my new apt, I categorized everything by color. I realized I have some key pieces, some shirts in too many of the same color (blue!!!), etc. I now shop for staple pieces, and colors that look good on me, or ones I don't have. I just bought three great shirts from Anthropologie that I basically live in right now:)
ReplyDeletehmm two votes for hanging by color. I will have to see if that would work for me!
Deleteanother good way to decide what you will get use out of, etc. is to do a 20 item or 30 item challenge and see what things you automatically choose to get the most wear from...
ReplyDeleteWhat a great plan! That's a challenge I think I could handle!
