San Francisco Recommendations

In a few weeks Leeann and I are headed to San Francisco! Leeann won (!) a free stay at a fancy hotel and invited me along for a mini getaway! We will be sightseeing and relaxing too (in our swanky room I hope). My last trip to San Francisco was during the summer of 2011 (post here). That was a pretty special trip because just after arriving at my friend's apartment my sister called to say she was pregnant (with Baby Nautical). Talk about starting a trip on a high note!

I've done a lot of the touristy things on previous trips so I think this trip Leeann and I are looking at more unique adventures and hidden gems. If we had more time I would do another tour of Alcatraz! That was one of my favorite tours.

What do you love to do in San Francisco? I would love your recommendations!

So far on our itinerary we have:
Meals at Mama's, Tartine, and Ragazza
A visit to Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39 (I always love seeing the sea lions)
A ghost tour of the city. Leeann does these when she travels and it always sounds like so much fun. I told her that I am in as long as I can hold her hand if I get scared ;)
Baker Beach (depending on the weather)
Exploring different neighborhoods: the Castro, Pacific Heights, and Nob Hill are on my list
Drinks at Top of the Mark

  1. My husband and I went to SF in July and it was great! For eats I would say check out The Crab Houe at Pier 39 and if you like Mexican, try Tropisueno (kinda near Union Square)!

  2. I think you would like the Marina District. Great preppy/relaxed shopping in a cute (and safe) neighborhood. There are lots of yummy restaurants and fun bars too. Baker Beach and Crissy Fields are both great beach areas. I know there is a long biking/walking path from Crissy Fields to Fort Mason. Many people rent bikes around there too

    1. Hi Darlene,
Thanks for your recommendations! I actually went to the Marina District on my last trip and loved it. Lots of cute shops! I am not sure if we will have time to go back this trip.

I think Leeann wanted to do Baker Beach. I'll add that and Crissy Fields to my list

  3. Oh gosh. I live here, and as a result I'd recommend some locals spots. Like, go to the Mission and get a taco. Eat at Delfina's, get ice cream at the Bi-Rite market, or a picnic. Go hang with hipsters in Dolores Park.

Go to Chinatown on a Saturday morning and see the shoppers. That same morning, go to the Ferry Building and buy cheese:).

Eat Peruvian food. Hike up the small trail under the Sutro Tower. Do walk across the GG Bridge, tourists maybe, but so, so gorgeous when we have a clear day. I could go on:) but maybe these aren't the kind of suggestions you are looking for?

Oh, wait, one more. Walk on the Embarcadero - never mind Fisherman's Wharf - and go for a half day to the amazing science museum, the Exploratorium. Learn about the Bay.

Ok. Now I will really stop. Although Darlene is right, you would like the Marina District. Some fun places on Union Street, and surely the preppiest part of an unpreppy city.

    1. I have been to the Mission and Dolores Park. I actually went to Delfina's for dinner on my last trip but would definitely go back!

I loved the Ferry Building and we may go there if we have time.

I can't remember if I've walked on the Embarcadero. I'll add that to my list.

I walked around the Marina neighborhood on my last trip. Really cute!

I will add your recommendations to my list. Thank you!
